2019 NYPC

SUMMER BBQ NEWS!!!

Special Announcement ATTENTION, ATTENTION!!! It's time to do it again!  It is my pleasure to announce the New York Pipe Club's 2019 Summer BBQ - Picnic, our 11th Annual Event!!!  This year, once again, please allow me to express, on behalf of the entire Club, our thanks and appreciation to long time and old time member, the "Keeper of the Leaf", himself, none other than, Charlie Pilnacek, and his lovely wife, Marie!  Our gracious hosts from our last four year's events, which were all a huge success, long time NYPC member and "Keeper of the Leaf, himself, Charlie Pilnacek (and his lovely wife, Marie) have once again, for the fifth year in a row, agreed to open up their beautiful back yard in sunny Lynbrook, Long Island, and host our fiesta!  What a time we had over the last four summers!   Last year's BBQ was a huge success and once again, we thank our beloved member, Charlie for his hospitality hosting the BBQ which was one of our biggest and best!  This year, like last, we head east to the southern shore of sunny Long Island!  What a time we had over the last four summers!

It’s always so good spending the day with so many friends from a number of Northeastern Region Pipe Clubs!
Spread the word to all!  I hope you all can join us again this time!  All are invited!!!

As always, with every NYPC event, All Are Welcome!!!

Picking a date always takes careful planning since, we want to ensure that everyone has opportunity to join us!

The party is scheduled for...

Saturday, August 17th

The Old Dominion Corn Cob Pipes and the BBQ get  fired up  on the 17th - bring your appetite!

The festivities start at 1pm
and club will provide the comestibles and soft libations (that's food and soft drinks).

If you'd like to bring something to throw on the grill, a plate or dish of your favorite food or dessert, we won't mind!!!

Alcohol will be BYOB.

We want to take this opportunity to thank our beloved member Charlie, for hosting the event and we extend our appreciation for his gracious hospitality.

For our outing this year, of course, as always, pipe smoking is allowed, encouraged, and de rigueur!

In keeping with our tradition, thankfully, and due to your generous dues payments, we will once again be able to provide as a gift, each attendee a free commemorative, "NYPC Summer Cob 2019" Corn Cob Pipe!

For this year's event, we will once again enjoy corn cobs, made the authentic way,  and provided by our good friend, Bob Savage, of The Old Dominion Tobacco Company!  We last enjoyed Bob’s cobs at our 10th Annual BBQ last year in 2018 and they were a huge hit with all fortunate enough to have received one.

It was a real pleasure to have once again seen Bob at this year’s Chicago Show and we spoke about the possibility of enjoying his cobs at this year’s Club BBQ.  He told me that the model we purchased back ay our 7th annual BBQ, the"Chesapeake", has undergone a complete remake!  This sounded very interesting and he went on to explain that the “Chesapeake” model is still now new and improved.  With that info, for this year, we once again selected the still new and improved “Chesapeake” model.  Bob explained that he has made some significant changes to the "Chesapeake" model and that the Club has been promised enough of them will be available to us.

Bob Savage.

Regarding this new and improved corn cob pipe, as per Bob:

"We have made some significant improvements in the size and quality of the pipe.  First, we increased the smoking chamber size diameter from 1/2" on the original Indian corn cob pipe model, to 5/8" using the heirloom Missouri pipe corn that we now use for all our corn cob pipes.  The heirloom MO pipe corn is a circa 1900 variety that was the industry standard for cob pipe making for the 1st half of the 20th century, before it was largely replaced by a hybrid variety in the 1950s.  To our knowledge we're the only pipe maker currently using this original pipe corn variety.  In addition, to give our pipes added durability, we have added hardwood base plugs in the bottom of the chambers."

You should know that we have been offered a really, really great discount on this model by Bob and our friends at Old Dominion and we appreciate that!

Old Dominion attended this year’s Chicago Show and I saw many, many pipe smokers with Old Dominion's cobs clenched in their teeth!  Each attendee to our BBQ will receive one fantastic looking authentic and historic Corn Cob Pipe!!!  Here's some photos of what each attendee can expect - mind you, this is the older model, ours will be the new larger and improved model with the wood plug insert so, it will be a bit different:

We've been promised that enough of them are available!

… and here's what you can expect to be filling those cobs with:

Our own beloved member, Dmitri Sassov has been making quite a name for himself within our Club with his masterful tobacco blending skills – he’s got “mad” blending skills!!!  We really do need to showcase Dmitri’s talent with the leaf beyond just our Club because everything this great man touches becomes "gold in the bowl" - and I am not exaggerating! And here’s your chance to see what I am talking about…

For our special event, once again, Dmitri has created an extraordinary blend just for our BBQ.  Dmitri will be debuting a blend he has named…

"Three Continents Blend"

This delicious blend features all premium tobaccos, from three different continents of the world, including:  Flue Cured Canadian Virginia, Dark Fired Kentucky, Turkish Samsun and Indonesian Bezuki!  What a combo!

It’s a blend that  really shines wonderfully in the bowl.  This blend is delicious, trust me when I tell you!!!  I had the privilege of sampling this wonderful blend at our July Monthly Meeting and it is absolutely delicious, believe me!

WHAT A WONDERFUL SUMMER TIME BLEND!!!

Dmitri will have ample samples for all of us to try and will also be offering this wonderful blend for sale at $8.00 for 1 oz. or $15.00 for 2 oz.  I guarantee that after you try it, you will definitely want to bring some of this wonderful blend home with you!  This could be your opportunity to sample a tobaccos that you ay have never tried before!

As always, the party will start at 1pm, and detailed instructions and directions for all attendees are included below. Charlie's place is an
easy drive for all of our members and friends from NY, NJ, CT and PA as many of you found out last year, so please do not let the venue location prevent you from joining us!!!

For those driving, we have provided detailed directions - see below - for your convenience.  For those without cars, Charlie's place is very near to the Long Island Rail Road's Lynbrook station and we can arrange to provide pick-ups for you from the station to Charlie's house, which is a short drive away.  If we know who is coming we'll also try to coordinate car-pooling.

IMPORTANT: For those driving, we need you to bring a folding chair or table or two.  Charlie has a limited number of seats and tables so additional seating and tables would be much appreciated.  Perhaps you might have pop-up tent style canopies which are very helpful. as well.
