I THANK YOU!

As always, please allow me to thank everyone for your continued support not only for your dues but by coming out to join us at the monthly meetings.  I urge you to spread the word about our noble hobby and to get involved with club activities, as I always say, "The club is only as successful in proportion to the involvement of its members", so, I encourage you to get involved!  As you know your annual dues are used to support all of our club activities such as, the monthly tobacco tastings, our summer picnic, our web site and emailings, and much more.

When you renew, we'd appreciate it if you could please take a moment to update your personal information, such as email, telephone number and address.

We're going to have a great 2019!

Please make every effort to join us
at our Monthly Meetings!

Please remember, my goal as your President, as always, is to do what is in the best interest for the club.  I try to remember to give opportunity at every meeting, by opening the floor for discussion, your chance to let me know what you like or don't like and to make suggestions to make our club a more enjoyable experience.  We all want our Club to thrive and prosper.

Members and Friends, I'm doing my very best to continue to generate interest in our Club as well as our hobby, and to maintain a thriving and encouraging environment for our Club, so I hope that you will all try your best to help me out to that end.  As I always say, "the club is only as successful in proportion to the involvement of its members", so please get involved.

I thank you all for your continued support and interest. I realize that we are all busy folks so I want you to know that I appreciate your time in coming out to our monthly meetings and to our impromptu extra events when scheduled from time to time. It is not easy to make the time and break away from our busy lives, I realize that, but consider the great times we have when we do get together, I know I enjoy myself thoroughly and wished it could happen more often!  Our Club BBQ/Picnic, for example, was a great event, enjoyed by all who came and I hope that more of you will come out to join us next time, as well as to any of our impromptu events such as the "Smoke on the Water" night and our "Smoke in the Clouds" events!  I assure you that you will have a great time!

YOU!

Although our Club dues are voluntary, and we'd love to try to keep it that way,

it is getting tougher to maintain a

"voluntary" dues policy.

Remember,
your paid dues of
only $25
go to support the workings of the club, the web site, the email system, our tobacco tastingsClub BBQ and much more.  Without them we'll no longer be able to maintain our website hosting fees and we'll lose the domain - I don't want that to happen!

Also, we'd love to continue the tradition of thanking our beloved members by providing tobacco for our annual IPSD Celebration and bringing you our annual Summer BBQ which is all supported by your dues!

Renewing or joining is easy - you can bring cash and checks to our meetings, and we accept all major credit cards via the website. See all the details on our website at

 Member Signup / Information

I URGE YOU
TO PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING YOUR VOLUNTARY DUES PAYMENT OF $25
A PRIORITY
FOR THE GOOD OF THE CLUB!!!

It has become a tradition for us to head over to JR Cigar after the show (5-6pm) where we can relax in the roomy and comfortable dining area and enjoy a smoke, the sharing of tobaccos and be treated to some pretty delicious menu offerings, not to mention live jazz music! We always have a great time!

Sometimes the really meaningful things are done without anyone ever knowing. You should know about this though!

I would like to thank a member whom you all do not know,
Timothy Hartle, Tim Hartle of Franklin, PA., for once again, sending the Club a very generous Holiday gift of several tins and bulk tobaccos for the Club to enjoy.  Tim lives too far away, Franklin, PA., almost as far as Pittsburgh, to attend meetings or events but always faithfully sends in his membership dues annually, even though he has never been able to physically be with us at a meeting or show!  That is dedication and I cannot tell you how much we appreciate Tim's support of our Club!  Thank you, Tim for the membership renewal and for the generous gifts of tobacco, we do hope to meet you in person some day and we will raise bowls in your honor!!!

On behalf of all of your brothers from the NYPC, I sincerely say...

                THANK YOU, TIM!!!

We hope to meet you in person one of these days!

December 13, 2018 Update:
All of us who attended the 2018 Kaywoodie Show heard an email read by Mr. Vernon Vig from Alexandra about how Rolando is doing.  We learned that he is doing OK and is enjoying days filled with walks in the woods, time spent in his shop and even a bowl every once in a while.  Our dear brother John, from Jersey City, spoke to Rolando recently and reports that he is doing OK, resting and recuperating from the ordeal and  welcomes hearing (email) from friends.
We all wish Rolando a speedy and full recovery and wish him and his family the best in 2019!

Rolando Ngoita

*UPDATE - APRIL/MAY 2018*
I was in touch with Alexandra Negoita letting her know what we are all doing for Rolando and that we all wish him the speediest of recovery. She said I could share her reply:

"Dear Louis, we are so grateful for the love and support coming our way!! No words can convey our gratitude. Rolando is on steady recovery. It is difficult, but we have hope. We do a lot of things besides the conventional treatments. I am full time taking care of him, and I have a lot of peace of mind due to the amazing support we have from all of you. Sorry I cannot keep up with contacts. I am rarely on FB these days. Wishing you a happy holiday! Please send our love and gratitude to everyone . Best, Alexandra & Rolando"

Dear Fellow Members of the NY Pipe Club,

A few weeks ago, I posted to our Facebook page about an extremely important need and a way that you could help make the situation hopefully a bit better.  You may or may not already know that one of the most respected pipe carvers in America, and more importantly, our dear friend, recently became ill.

Rolando Negoita, whom many of you already know from the Northeast Regional Pipe Smoking Contest, (Kaywoodie Event), held in December, had a malignant tumor in his brain which was surgically removed a couple of months ago.  Rolando’s family set up a site for donations to help them through this difficult time (https://www.youcaring.com/rolandonegoita-1077649).

In addition Marty Pulvers, of Pulvers Briar online store, has started a second effort, this one focused around asking members of the pipe community if they have any pipes in their collection that they aren't smoking and would be willing to donate.  I think Marty's idea is that while cash may be short for many of us at any given time, most of us probably do have one or more pipes that we don't smoke and are too busy to sell.  Any pipes donated will be sold by Marty on his website, and the entire proceeds donated towards Rolando's care and recovery.  If you go to Marty's website you can see his description of the effort, but you need to scroll down a bit to find it: http://pulverspriorbriar.com/index.html

As per Marty:

On the Rolando Negoita front: A thoughtful &
generous, but anonymous, member of our
community has developed an excellent plan, it
seems, to help raise funds for a much loved pipe
maker in need.  In addition to the money he
donated for Rolando's medical expenses, our
friend is going to send me a couple of pipes for
this site, the sale proceeds of which will all be
donated to Rolando's care.  If  you care to donate
a pipe or two, that you no longer smoke, for this
purpose, please contact me and I will give you my
home address & the pipe will be posted as quickly
as possible.

If you care to make cash contributions, that is
still a great option.  The site through which you
can do that is listed below, at the bottom of my
initial posting regarding Rolando's health woes, which follows here...

Folks, unlike most of my drivel, here is some
very important news, which I should have known
but only just found out about: Rolando Negoita
had a serious brain tumor, was operated on and
will be under-going chemo and radiation therapy.
Pipe makers, even great ones like
Rolando, do not make the kind of money
that gets them through major medical crises.  If
you know Rolando, and the exceptional, sweet
person that he is, I know you will want to donate.
This is the link to so doing.  Be generous.
https://www.youcaring.com/rolandonegoita-1077649

If any of you have pipes you'd care to donate, please reach out to Marty directly at mpulvers@aol.com, and he will give you the mailing address to which they should be sent.  Please remember to include a note specifying that the enclosed pipes are donations to the Rolando Negoita pipe project.

I encourage all of you to dig deep and do what you are able to help this wonderfully sweet and gentle soul, not to mention being one of the most talented and unique pipe makers in the world and who resides right here in the Hudson Valley, our brother Rolando, as he and his family rebuild after this difficult time.

See below for a quick update from Rolando and his family.

I thank you all,

Lo

Thank you so so so much to everyone!

Your support for Rolando and our family has been tremendous. We can't believe how well the community has come together to help us out.

Times are tough, but we have to make the most from it and take each day as it comes. Rolando is handling the treatment relatively well.

Rolando

Here's a photo of Rolando showing off his scar :)

Thank you for your love, from the bottom of our hearts.

PS: SAVE THE DATE -- Saturday, March 17 -- people will be getting together at Paula Kucera's White Barn Farm space to rally more support for the Negoita family.

2018 10th Annual NYPC Summer BBQ

Thanks to all who came out for our 10th Annual Summer BBQ! It was a huge success! There were 30+ in attendance at one point throughout the day. The weather finally cooperated, although it was as humid as all hell!!! BUT, it was an absolutely spectacular day!!!

Obviously, we all missed our dear brother Dan Silverstone, who was always a fixture at all NYPC events.  His untimely passing shocked all of us.  We miss him dearly, as we also miss our brother Z, both gone waaaayyy too soon.

A HUGE thanks go out to our very own Club Tobacco Blender Extraordinaire, Dmitri Sassov, for offering up a very special blend made just for the day, and it was outstanding!!!

… and here's more about what we were filling those cobs with:

Our own beloved member, Dmitri Sassov has been making quite a name for himself within our Club with his masterful tobacco blending skills – he’s got “mad” blending skills!!!  We really do need to showcase Dmitri’s talent with the leaf beyond just our Club because everything this great man touches becomes "gold in the bowl" - and I am not exaggerating! And here’s your chance to see what I am talking about…

For our special event, Dmitri created an extraordinary blend just for our BBQ.  Dmitri debuted a blend he has named…

"Summertime Limited Edition"

This delicious blend features all premium tobaccos, including:  A Blender's Bench Decade Series Perique, McClelland Virginia, McClelland Turkish and Dark Fried Kentucky.

It’s a blend that  really shines wonderfully in the bowl.  This blend is delicious, trust me when I tell you!!!

WHAT A WONDERFUL SUMMER TIME BLEND!!!

Dmitri had ample samples for all of us to try and also is offering this wonderful blend for sale at $8.00 for 1 oz. or $15.00 for 2 oz.  I guarantee that after you try it, you will definitely want to bring some of this wonderful blend home with you!  This could be your last chance at enjoying McClelland tobaccos, as well!

WHAT A GREAT DAY!!!

THE  CHICAGOLAND

          INT'L.  PIPE  & TOBACCIANA SHOW!

 May 5th & 6th, 2018

SHOW REPORT!!!

The NY Pipe Club showed up in Chicago this year with roughly 6-8 members; our attendance was way down from previous years.  But, we were treated to what has become known as the greatest pipe show on earth!   I would strongly encourage you to make every effort to make it out to that show, you will not disappointed!

Well, it seems to always come and go so quickly but, once again, those of us who attended had a great time at the "Show of Shows" in Chicago at the Pheasant Run Resort!  Our club was not as well represented as in past years with approximately 6-8 members in attendance, however, there was no lack of billowing smoke, single malts, Brother David's delicious coffee or high end Rum for that matter!  Some special thanks go out to our west coast buddy, fellow "Brother of the Briar" and Pres. of the great Seattle Pipe Club, Matt Guss (our own Peter & Jon's brother), for once again extending to us an invitation to the wonderful Seattle Pipe Club Cocktail Party, which has become a legendary tradition!  We had a great time and it was great seeing old friends and meeting new ones!  Thank you, once again, Matt!

As for the Show...

There was the usual huge selection of new and estate pipes, as always, as well as some wonderful new blends available at the show, especially popular were the remaining inventory of whatever McClelland blend that could be found, going for 2-5x's the original retail prices!!!

I can also proudly report that the American Pipe Maker continues to be well represented as there was a strong showing of young American carvers who had some phenomenal pipes for sale.  What a fantastic boom to the hobby to see such great creativity coming from artisans from our own shores.

Another outstanding job done by Craig Cobine, Tom Dinelli and the Chicagoland Pipe Collectors Club, in putting on this incredible "global" event, from the free welcome dinner on Friday night to the 6,000-square foot smoking tent which was once again "the" place to meet pipe makers and tobacco blenders from around the world!  What an outstanding job!

A special tribute and remembrance for legendary pipemaker, Lars Ivarsson, was realized in a wonderful display case containing many of Lar's classics and Lar's last carved pipe fetched over $23,000.00 in the Silent Auction which was donated by our friend, Nana Ivarrson.

Our Coterie will dearly miss him!

The display also focused on many turn of the century and older Peterson Pipes; just wonderful!  It was nice speaking with Gary Malmberg about the pipes, most of which were from his personal collection, and about the upcoming Peterson book publication which is a collaborative effort between Gary and noted Peterson Pipe expert, Mark Irwin.  I cannot wait!!!

As always, the best part of the Chicago Show is meeting and spending time with all of the fine folks of the hobby, friends old and new, from “Brother David” and his strong and tasty coffee, to Salvatore “Toto” Amorelli, who I also had the pleasure of spending more time with this year, a wonderful gentleman and so much fun to be around, and a host of other wonderful, wonderful people - and oh, yeah, the Slow Smoke Contest was a blast, thank you to the UPCA’s Doc Garr, Tom Dinelli and our own, Mr. Vig (we missed you Mr. Bull!!!).  The contest pipe, a poker sitter from Briarworks, was an outstanding contest performer - and the blend was delicious: 1 year aged McClelland's 5100, but of course!

Why not make it a point to join us next year, you will not be disappointed, I assure you!  Photos have been posted on our Website, see the link below, and Facebook page and I thank those who took all those photos as I sadly took none!

Oh, No!   FDA  All Up in Our Business!

July 28, 2017 Updates!

A Small Reprieve?

Thanks to our good brother, Kevin Godbee, I pass along these comments from his pipesmagazine.com forum:

From Kevin:

"There's a lot of mumbo jumbo, rhetoric, and pulled out of thin air $$$ claims on health, blah, blah, blah, but here is what I derived from this. Here's two copy / paste that are somewhat good news for pipe tobacco and premium cigars, which have been getting swept up as collateral damage in the FDA vs. Big Tobacco Wars.

"the agency is also providing targeted relief on some timelines described in the May 2016 final rule that extended the FDA’s authority to additional tobacco products."

"Under expected revised timelines, applications for newly-regulated combustible products, such as cigars, pipe tobacco and hookah tobacco, would be submitted by Aug. 8, 2021 ..."

So, we get some more breathing room to try to talk more sense into them. It seems some of those efforts resulted in the above, so fingers crossed.

The other general thing I get out of it is that nicotine is bad because it is addictive, so it makes people want to smoke cigarettes, and smoke is bad. However, when I decipher the wording, the impressions I get is that nicotine is bad, but it's not as bad in other forms outside of tobacco, and some people are going to get addicted anyway, so let's make sure they can still get their nicotine without smoke.

It's seems the vape and ecig makers are making better bed partners with the FDA than tobacco."

Thank you, Kevin for allowing us to quote you!

FDA Press Announcements...

OLDER:
I assume you all know something of the new FDA "Deeming" rules regarding tobacco products and even affecting pipes themselves.  Well, things are going to bumpy and downright invasive right quick.

I know good friend, Kevin Godbee wouldn't mind me referring to an article written by friend, Tom Wolfe, of the great Seattle Pipe Club, by including this link here from his great, pipesmagazine.com website, thank you Kevin for providing a sounding board for us all:

Great job sorting this mess out, Tom and I hope that some way, some how, for the sake and future of our beloved hobby, common sense prevails and we see this government over reach go the way of prohibition.

Here's more info on the FDA's intrusion on our hobby from Kevin's site for you to ponder and puff by, and the newest article written by our good friend, Mr. Rick Newcomb...

Old News,

                     but Not To Be Forgotten...!

Broken Pipe...
You better sit down.

Most of you already know the tragic news of the untimely passing of our dear brother Dan Silverstone, as I emailed the Club when I found out on Monday, July 16th.  The announcement read something like this:dan.

It is with the deepest sadness and sorrow that I report this most devastating news which I just learned. Our dear brother and long-time Club member, Dan Silverstone, has passed. I am in complete shock right now and can’t begin to tell you how heartbroken I am. I can’t even process this. Oh, my dear God!

About two weeks ago, on July 5th, Dan contacted me to tell me that after all he has been through with his back operation, he was experiencing pain in his stomach and had to go back to the hospital where they found a tumor in his stomach. He was to have a biopsy the following day. I emailed him a few days ago to follow up with him and had not heard anything until this devastating email arrived moments ago. It is from Dan’s wife, Ginger:

Hi Lou,
Dan passed yesterday at 3:05 p.m. He had cancer in his lung and pancreas and was not able to make it. Please let his closest friends know what has happened.
I am sorry for the news. We are planning his funeral and still not certain on the day.
I will need your help later on as time goes on.
Dan really loved you.
Love,
His wife, Ginger

I don’t know what say. Obviously, on behalf of the entire Club, we extend our deepest condolences to Ginger and their family. This one hits so hard. I felt very close to Dan and have known him for so long, one of my first friends in the Club.

Please join me in raising bowls in memory and honor of our dear friend and brother Dan, if you did not have the pleasure of meeting him, I can tell you that he was one of the nicest, kindest and gentlest souls I have ever had the privilege of knowing. We will all miss him. On behalf of the entire NY Pipe Club, I extend our deepest condolences to Dan's wife and family at this time of sorrow.
dankaywoodie.
I don’t know what say… Live and Love, my friends, life is too short…

As per Dan's wife Ginger and if the spirit moves you...
Bide a wee

ATTENTION!!!  ATTENTION!!!

I recently received an email forward from our very own, Vernon Vig who received this email from the widow of our late brother "Z".  I wanted to include it in this newsletter as she offers a nice way to memorialize and remember our dear brother "Z" Kriz, who was taken from us way too soon, just about a year ago.

From "Z"'s widow, Marcy:

From: Marcy Arlin <marcyarlin@gmail.com>
Date: September 18, 2017 at 5:46:09 PM EDT
To: undisclosed-recipients:;
Subject: Zdenek

Dear friends, family and loved ones,

As some of you may know, it has now been a year since Zdenek's death. You were all there for him and for me, before his illness, during, and after, for which I am so grateful.

What I hope you can do, in any way that seems right, is remember Zdenek and his decency and kindness and artistic genius, his quirkiness, his silence and how much he cared for his friends and family.

If you feel motivated, a contribution to a charity that he loved in his name would I am sure make him feel good, if that is possible. He loved wolves, and trees, and the environment. Defenders of Wildlife, Greenpeace,  Trust for Public Land, The Arbor Society, NRDC, or any other organization that cares for the earth and its creatures.

Or plant a tree. Pet a dog. Buy a friend a cup of coffee. Drink a cup of tea and smoke a pipe if that is what you do.

I don't have everyone's address so it would be great if you can notify others, like the guys from work, or theatre, or the pipe club, or Laterna, or relatives in Prague, anyone that cared for Zdenek.

At some point when I am able I hope to put together an exhibit of his paintings and drawings, images from the shows he designed, and maybe his poems (yes, he wrote poetry! in Czech of course).

Lots of love,

Marcy

So, let's all remember our dear brother "Z" and take Marcy's suggestions to heart - some won't even cost any money.  We all miss "Z" dearly and this would be a great way to honor our brother and remember him and the warmth he brought to all who had the privilege to know him.

More Sad News...

 Broken Pipe...
 Sam Barnett

A sad report from Rich Esserman...

So very sad to hear of this news about our longtime friend Sam Barnett, who, as almost all of us know, was the co-host of the long running NY Pipe Shows along with Rich for many, many years.  I last saw Sam at the NY Pipe Show in March of this year and I became quite concerned at how he looked.  This post from Rich confirmed my worst fears.  I know I speak for all of us, his friends, when I offer our deepest condolences to Sam's family.  May he rest in peace and we raise bowls in his memory.

From Rich...

Broken Pipe - Sam Barnett passed away on November 11, 2018. Sam had been battling several illnesses.

I knew Sam since April or May of 1978. Sam was introduced to me at the time as another 'pipe nut". We shared many wonderful pipe adventures through out our life including hosting the NY Pipe Show for the last 24 years.
I will miss Sam greatly as he was a one of kind personality and a true friend.

I will write more in NASPC The Pipe Collector.

May Sam RIP.

Sam asked me to continue the NY pipe - so I will - more to be announced.

Sam was a very sweet man. I will miss him, as I am sure many will.

Kudos and thanks to our own talented, Dan Silverstone, creator of our beautiful tin labels, who has worked hard to convert our tin labels to fit the new tin format, now that Sutliff, under the direction of our great friend and club blend creator, master blender extraordinaire, Russ Ouellette, is driving production. On that note, we are also anticipating having our blends tinned in the popular round Euro-style tins. Stay tuned for more info on that as the story develops!

And, remember at some point in the future, we can consider expanding our NYPC "NY State of Mind Collection" series to new and interesting blends yet to come! I look forward to seeing them on the shelves and in a briar, meerschaum or corn cob bowl near you!!!

Thanks again to our friends at Nat Sherman for making this possible, we appreciate it!!!

CIPC President, Cornelius Crans

                             Visits our NY Pipe Club!

Our NY Pipe Club had the distinct privilege of welcoming a distinguished guest at our May 2014 meeting: Cornelius Crans and his wonderful wife.  Cornelius is the President of the CIPC - Comite International of Pipe Smoker Clubs, who, thanks to our own Mr. Vernon Vig, made a stop over in our fair City after attending the 2014 Chicago Pipe Show.
The CIPC was founded in Saint-Claude, France in 1973 as an association of national pipe clubs to foster friendship and camaraderie among pipe smokers worldwide.  Our new friend Cornelius is the current President.  The UPCA - United Pipe Clubs of America, whom we belong to, is a member of the CIPC.
Here is a link to CIPC Brochures:

Also, at the May Meeting, I was the proud recipient of a generous gift from Cornelius.  Cornelius presented me with a traditional Dutch Porcelain Commemorative Pipe (for display purposes) as well as a clay version that can be smoked.  He also presented me with the traditional Troost Special Cavendish Pipe Tobacco to go along with the pipes!  I was so honored to receive them and they will take a special place not only in my collection but in my heart.
I hope that we can once again enjoy his company at a NYPC Monthly Meeting in the future!
Thank you, Cornelius for your generous gift.  It was a pleasure for us to meet you and your wonderful wife.  You both are honorary members of our NY Pipe Club.  Please stay in touch and I look forward to seeing you soon!

                              The Latest NEWS

                                       ABOUT OUR

                        NYPC TOBACCO BLENDS!!!

Just a quick word to let you know that all four of our storied blends are NOW re-stocked and available for sale at NYPC Tobacco Blends at www.pipesandcigars.com.  As many of you know, if you have attempted to order at least two of our wonderful NYPC Tinned Tobacco Blends from pipesandcigars.com in the last 9 months or more you would have found that they have been continually out of stock which was cause for much frustration.  Our dear friend and master blender of our tinned tobaccos, Russ Oulette, has worked very hard to meet the demand for the blends however, due to his new role and ever expanding responsibilities with pipesandcigars.com, it became increasingly difficult for him to sufficiently meet that demand and supplies have suffered.  This is especially true of the two pressed Virginia blends which are the most time consuming to produce.

After some valuable input, advice and suggestions from many of our own NYPC members, upon having opportunity to sample the Sutliff versions, Russ has communicated our recommended adjustments to Sutliff and as a result, 192 tins of each blend were produced.  The resulting inventory is back on the shelves NOW at www.pipesandcigars.com!!!

With Sutliff driving production, we can be now assured that our blends will be continuously available.  It will also help keep the royalties coming in to help fund club activities and tobacco tastings.

Our own Dan Silverstone, creator of our beautiful tin labels, has worked with Russ to convert our tin labels to fit the new tin format.  On that note, we are also exploring the possibility of having our blends tinned in the popular round Euro-style tins.  Stay tuned for more info on that as the story develops!

We are also in discussion about having our blends be made available via other internet tobacco sales sources in addition to pipesandcigars.com, which would open up sales to a greater degree.  And finally, we are also discussing having our blends be made available in bulk form.

I am positive all this will work out perfectly for us, as it has for many of Russ' own blends, as well as other Pipe Club's and their tinned blends, which he created and are now produced by Sutliff.  This solution will enable Russ, via Sutliff, to supply the demand for our wonderful NYPC tinned blends on a continuous basis.

Again to reiterate, most importantly to me in all of this is that, like Russ’ blends, our own NYPC Blends, will be made to Russ’ exacting specifications in every way.  That means using the exact same leaf quality, production processes and strict adherence to the recipes that we as a club, along with Russ, have worked so hard to achieve over a number of years.  The only noticeable changes will be the tins (containers themselves - and some great news regarding them will be revealed soon - like utilizing the round Euro-style vacuum sealed tins -) and the thickness of the cake slices, as they (Sutliff) have the capacity to cut them thinner for easier prep – which is a good thing in my opinion.

And, remember at some point in the future, with Sutliff driving production, we can consider expanding our NYPC "NY State of Mind" series to new and interesting blends yet to come!  I am sure that we will be satisfied with the Sutliff versions and I look forward to seeing them back on the shelves and in a briar, meerschaum or corn cob bowl near you!!!

NYPC Pipe Tobacco Blends!

***You may have heard that pipesandcigars.com was purchased recently by Cigars International, a Pennsylvania based retailer and one of the biggest on the planet.  Well have no fear, our blends are still under the blending prowess  of our dear friend and "brother" Russ Oulette, who is now with the retailer in Bethlehem, PA.  So, not only are our blends still in the best hands they can be, the best part is that NY State residents have a reprieve from the 75% tobacco tax because the shipping originates from PA.  So, stock up on those blends now!

You can read all about the sale of pipesandcigars.com at the following link courtesy of our friend, Kevin Godbee and pipesmagazine.com.  BTW, our buddy Scott from Habana Smoke Shop, the brick and mortar arm of pipesandcigars.com, still owns the shop so if fate ever finds you in or around the Albany, NY area, please be sure to stop in and say hello!

Now back to our blends...!

As you may have heard, thanks to good friend, Russ Oulette, our own series of four tinned tobacco blends, the NY State of Mind Collection, made their proud debut exclusively on our good friend, Kevin Godbee's informative pipesmagazine.com website and "in the tins" at the 2012 Chicagoland Pipe and Tobaccianna Show on May 5th and 6th, compliments of pipesandcigars.com, where our blends were extremely well received by all!  Many thanks go out to Scotty and the gang at pipesandcigars.com, exclusive distributors of our blends, who had a ton of samples which were given away to all.  With our four blend variety, there was something to please almost any taste!

Pipes & Tobaccos Magazine Reviews...

                                         NY Pipe Club Blends!

As I have been telling you, our club blends currently enjoy favorable and positive reviews in the Fall 2012 Issue of Pipes & Tobaccos Magazine's Trial by Fire section on fine tobaccos.  Tobacco tasting connoisseurs Tad Gage and Joe Harb have been reviewing blends for P&T Magazine for years.  Tad Gage is a blender of fine tobaccos and Joe Harb was a judge at the 2012 Chicago Show's John Cotton Throwdown.  Both are well versed in critiquing tobacco blends of all types and their opinions are of the most respected in the hobby.

I am overjoyed, to say the least especially knowing how hard we all worked on achieving the finished product, that our 4 blends received extremely positive and favorable reviews from both of these gentlemen - and of course, I concur!!! (LOL!!!)  But seriously, both Mr. Gage and Mr. Harb enjoyed sampling our blends, loved the artwork - I kid you not, at the 2012 Chicago Show in which our blends debuted, I had requests from pipe smokers who wanted to buy the tins for the artwork alone - I am so proud of that, let alone the blends themselves, and both commented that they would love to revisit the blends after they have put some age on the tins.  So this is fantastic news for our blends!  Pick yourself up a back-copy of the Fall 2012 Issue at your local tobacconist or order one from the link listed below.  And... If you are currently not a subscriber to this fine publication you should really consider taking out a subscription and lend them your support.

Speaking of P&T Magazine...

If you are a subscriber to this fine publication then you will already know that the club has placed a quarter page ad which appeared, appropriately, in the "Trial By Fire" tobacco review section in the Winter 2013 Issue.  A follow up ad also appears in the Spring 2014 issue.  Here is a copy of our ad, and once again, THANK YOU, to club member Dan Silverstone for lending your expertise in graphical arts for the benefit of our club, we appreciate it!

ATTENTION! ATTENTION!!!

Soho Cigar Bar Backroom
Much to our surprise, we learned at our November 2014 Monthly Meeting that Circa Tabac is now...SoHo Cigar Bar!  After a long successful run being known as, Circa Tabac, one of the oldest cigar bar's in New York City, the brand name has been changed and the lounge has been revamped! There is everything and all of what we have come to love and enjoy about the place and now after the renovations, there's even more to love about our meeting place including the announcement of their own brand of cigars, Soho Cigars; can a line of pipe tobacco be next???

The Art Deco inspired bar offers an artisanal menu and the finest cigars, cocktails and food.  As per owner, Lee Ringelheim, “I wanted to create a space that feels like you are stepping back in time and having a true New York City experience”. “I wanted to launch a cigar line that represented this city, the history of the bar and its location. It’s a craft I’m passionate about and I want to share that with my loyal customers and introduce it to new ones. My goal is to make cigars and whiskies more approachable for everyone. I want to eliminate the pretension, intimidation and many associations with them.”

The Soho Cigar Bar will also now have extended hours on Saturday's and Sunday's, opening at noon. The new menu also includes an expanded rye and whiskey selection. Space is also available for both semi-private and private parties.

FYI...  Food For Thought...  I am sure you are well aware of the change in our relationship with Florio's while we were meeting there.  Effective with our February 2010 meeting, a $10 per person cover charge was imposed to use the upstairs cigar lounge. Payment of this fee enabled us to continue to use the lounge for our monthly meetings and was collected by the waitress when you entered the lounge.  The fee was for use of the cigar lounge only and did not go to the waitress.  Please note that the main complaint from Florio's management was that the waitress was not sufficiently compensated (tipped) for her service, so please, especially now that we are meeting at a new location, let us heed this message at our new venue, SoHo Cigar Bar and I urge you to please tip accordingly as you settle your food and drink tab at the end of the evening.  It will go a long way towards securing our invitation to return.  SoHo Cigar Bar has made every effort to ensure our comfort so let's please remember to tip accordingly.

I THANK YOU!

A Word from our President:

Greetings NY Pipe Club Members,

I want to take this moment to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your next President. No one could ever replicate the contribution of Mr. Vernon Vig or the legacy that he has left; however, it is my intention to be the leader and friend as he was during his tenure. I know I speak for all of us in thanking him for the devotion and dedication that he has shown for our club.

It is my hope and intention to continue along the path that has been forged and I will commit to promote a vibrant and enthusiastic environment and to help promote and spread the joy of our hobby.

But, I need and would appreciate your help. A club is only as successful in proportion to the involvement of its members. I encourage you to get involved. Speak to me about your ideas on how we can make the club even better than it is right now. I will listen and do my best to help make our club an enjoyable and comfortable place for all.

As always, stay well and happy smoking - and I'll see you at the next meeting!

Please join us at the next meeting,

Tuesday, 6:00pm,

March 12th
