New York Pipe Show's 20th Annual Pipe Convention March 9, 2013

ATTENTION, ATTENTION!!!

           And now a word from your president...


WOW!! 20 Years!

I fondly recall the first show in 1993 at the Hotel Pennsylvania on 34th Street in NYC directly across from Madison Square Garden, what a show! I attended that show with my best friend and briar brother, Freddy Alvarez, may he rest in peace, who was the first friend I ever had the privilege of sharing a bowl with way back in 1977 and one of only two close buddies in my group of friends, hell, in our entire neighborhood for that matter, who smoked a pipe.

It was my first pipe show experience and upon entering the show hall I was so overwhelmed. The amount of vendors, tables, pipes, tobaccos; it was a sensory overload! I remember meeting for the first time many of the fine folk that I still see today at the shows I attend, and unfortunately some who are no longer with us. I remember meeting there for the first time the late Barry Levin who pioneered the Estate Pipe Market as well as the artisan tobacco blending trends so popular ever since. The late Craig Tarler and his wife Patty were there and had an entire table filled with loose tobacco to sample, of course our own Sailorman Jack was there as well as so many of the other fine people of the hobby that I had the pleasure to meet at that first show. I still have the pipe I bought at that show, a Brebbia Pura 1992 SAX 1997 Jubilee, that was part of a series of six pipes beginning in 1992 and ending in 1997 to celebrate and commemorate the company's 50th Anniversary!

Well, it’s been 20 years and although the location has changed, we’re still at it!

So, I hope that you are able to join us at the show and please remember that after the show we head on over to JR Cigar on Rt. 10 in nearby Whippany, NJ where we get to show off our new acquisitions, grab a bite to eat, toast the day over some fine beverage and of course, we can smoke while doing it. It’s a comfortable spot and a great way to cap off the day so try to join us if you can.
