(FYI... I'm lining up a special Mystery Guest - I hope he can join us!!!)
Special Announcement!!!
ATTENTION, ATTENTION!!!
It's time to do it again! The New York Pipe Club 2013
Summer BBQ/Picnic is right around the corner!!! More accurately, once again our own beloved member Hank Saatchi has
graciously offered to host our annual pipe club BBQ get-together at his
home in East Brunswick, New Jersey.
Last years BBQ was a smash success even in spite of the
drizzle - Hank
has a cozy screened in area where we were able to continue
the smokes and the festivities!
The party is scheduled for Saturday, July 13th starting at 1pm and the club will provide the comestibles and soft libations (that's food and soft drinks). Alcohol will be BYOB.
We want to take this opportunity to thank our beloved member Hank,
for hosting the event once again and we extend our appreciation for his
gracious hospitality. If you never had some of Hank's world famous BBQ,
then this is your opportunity!
Directions to Hank's below, keep reading!
For our outing this year, of course, as always, pipe smoking is allowed, encouraged, and de rigueur!
As I mentioned, I am trying to line up a special Mystery Guest
and I hope that he can make it and join us for what is always a festive
occasion for the club! I won't tell who he is so you'll just have to
make it a point to come out and join us to find out!!! Either way, you
won't be disappointed that you came.
It has been the practice of the club to provide attendees with an "official"
NYPC Corn Cob pipe and we would like to continue that tradition. For
2013, our own, Peter Guss made a great suggestion as to the type of cob
we should enjoy this year since we have tried almost every other shape:
this year it will be the Missouri Pride model which is a cob that is left in its
rough and natural finish. It's a great suggestion and I have obtained the
usual cache of cobs for us in both the straight and bent versions. This club cob will be stamped in the usual fashion, NYPC - Picnic Cob 2013, to commemorate the special event. Be sure to join us so that you too can add this commemorative club cob to your collection because, as always, the official NYPC 2013 Summer Picnic Corn Cob Pipe will be available only to attendees, so be sure to join us! Here's a photo of what you can expect (sans the nomenclature)...
This years tobacco offering was suggested by our own Dan
Silverstone who recommended that we sample some of the "new" Mel
Feldman's "The
Smoker" blends which have been recreated and blended by master blender,
and friend of the club, Russ Oulette. These blends debuted at the 2013
Chicago Pipe Show and were a huge success. Four blends will be waiting
for you after you receive your official club cob.
St. James - This
blend is a rich and flavorful powerhouse of a smoke with a substantial
amount of Perique supported by some Latakia for body. The addition of
Virginias and a touch of Burley give St. James a nice touch of sweetness
and nuttiness with excellent burning qualities. Light up a unique
mixture that’s incredibly satisfying.
Saratoga - An
all Virginia blend with a wide ranging selection of Bright leaf
varieties. Bright and red leaf are combined with yellow that has been
carefully stoved until black for body and sweetness, then a pressed,
matured version is added and it’s finished off with a bit of lightly
scented broken flake. The result is a wonderfully complex Virginia blend
sure to satisfy.
Old Virginia: This is a real honest American style
Virginia/Perique blend. Unlike many of the more delicate versions of
this genre, the Perique content is significantly elevated to create a
very bold flavor profile. Using bright and red Virginias, there’s an
underlying sweetness with excellent burning qualities. Not overly
complex, but immensely enjoyable.
Legacy: A full, rich Latakia blend with the addition
of hard to find Yenidje which helps to make this a fragrant, tasty
blend. Perique adds some additional depth and three different and
distinct Virginias add complexity and sweetness. Legacy takes you back
to the days of bold yet smooth tobaccos that filled the air with rich,
genuine tobacco aromas.
Free food, free 'baccy, a free cob - who wouldn't want to attend? Whether
you can or you can't make it, please RSVP "Yes" or "No" with an email
or call Lou at 347-886-9784 by Monday, July 1st the latest, so that
we'll have an idea of who is coming. We need to know how much food and
drink to buy so please let us know even if you aren't planning to attend
the gathering. Wives and children are also welcome.
The party will start at 1pm - here is Hank's address:

For
those without cars, take the bus out of Port Authority in NYC to the
East Brunswick Tower Center stop or take the North East Corridor Line
train from Penn Station to New Brunswick, use the express if possible.
In both cases, we will work on arranging to have you picked up from
those stations to Hank's place which is a short drive away. If we know
who is coming we'll also try to coordinate car-pooling from New York
City. Call Lou at 347-886-9784 and I'll try my best to work it out.
*** As per our good brother Mike B, please take note of his suggestion if you are taking the bus out of NYC:
"The bus service to the East Brunswick Tower Center is Suburban Transit (Coach USA) and their gates are on the fourth floor (Gates 417 to 420) at Port Authority, NYC. Check at their ticket booth before you go up to the platform (the ticket booth is on the first floor) to buy your ticket. I believe it is about $9.00 each way. Buses depart every half hour on the hour.
I would recommend the bus service rather than train. It takes the same amount of time and is closer to Hank's house."
IMPORTANT: For those driving, we need you to bring a folding chair or two. Hank has a limited number of seats so additional seating would be much appreciated.
This
event is free and is made possible by your voluntary dues payment of
$25 per year. If you haven't paid your 2013 dues, now would be a great
time to do so via the website or by seeing Lou at the picnic. If you aren't
sure whether you are a 2013 member, just ask!
FYI...
if you are a sharp detective (Mike B. you don't count - unfair
advantage!) you may have detected a bit of a clue about the Mystery
Guest but I will say no more!
This
looks to be another great pipe event of the social season, so don't
miss it. Mark your calendars, warn your spouses, and start choosing
your best picnic pipes. See you there!
