We all want our Club to thrive and prosper.

Members and Friends, I'm doing my very best to continue to generate interest in our Club as well as our hobby, and to maintain a thriving and encouraging environment for our Club, so I hope that you will all try your best to help me out to that end. I thank you all for your continued support and interest. I realize that we are all busy folks so I want you to know that I appreciate your time in coming out to our monthly meetings and to our impromptu extra events when scheduled from time to time. It is not easy to make the time and break away from our busy lives, I realize that, but consider the great times we have when we do get together, I know I enjoy myself thoroughly and wished it could happen more often! Our Club BBQ/Picnic, for example, was a great event, enjoyed by all who came and I hope that more of you will come out to join us next time, as well as to any of our impromptu events such as the "Smoke on the Water" night! I assure you that you will have a great time!

NYPC Summer BBQ & Picnic NEWS!!!

At this years Chicago Show, there was the usual huge selection of new and estate pipes, as well as some wonderful new blends which were debuted at the show. The blending genius of none other than our good friend, Russ Oulette, received notice as Russ has produced 4 new blends designed specifically to be smoked in a corn cob! That's right; these blends were produced for optimum performance in a corn cob pipe. The blends are marquee'd under the Missouri Meerschaum name, naturally! Also, commemorative cobs were produced for the occasion – does anyone see a connection to a NY Pipe Club Summer BBQ theme!?! YES, I DO!!!

I proudly announce and remind you all of our...

6th Annual NY Pipe Club Summer BBQ & Picnic

...to be held on Saturday, July 12th at 1:00pm at the home of our generous host and dear club member, Hank Saatchi, THANK YOU, Hank!!!

Special Announcement - ATTENTION, ATTENTION!!! Yes, it's time to do it again! It is my pleasure to once again announce and remind you of the New York Pipe Club's 2014 Summer BBQ - Picnic, our 6th annual event!!! Once again, our own beloved member Hank Saatchi has graciously offered to host our annual pipe club BBQ get-together at his home in East Brunswick, New Jersey. Last years BBQ was a smash success even in spite of the drizzle - Hank has a cozy screened in area where we were able to continue the smokes! The party is scheduled for...

Saturday, July 12th

The festivities start at 1pm and the club willprovide the comestibles and soft libations (that's food and soft drinks). Alcohol will be BYOB.

We want to take this opportunity to thank our beloved member Hank, for hosting the event once again and we extend our appreciation for his gracious hospitality. If you never had some of Hank's world famous BBQ, then this is your opportunity!

For our outing this year, of course, as always, pipe smoking is allowed, encouraged, and de rigueur!

As I mentioned, I am trying to line up a special Mystery Guest and I hope that he can make it and join us for what is always a festive occasion for the club! I won't tell who he is so you'll just have to make it a point to come out and join us to find out!!! Either way, you won't be disappointed that you came.

In keeping with our tradition we will once again provide each attendee a free commemorative, stamped "NYPC Summer Cob 2014" corn cob pipe, and for 2014 we have one of the newly offered Missouri Meerschaum models! Our theme for this year, was influenced by our experience at the Chicago Pipe show this past May, take a look:

So, for this years event, we have selected the new Mark Twain model from Missouri Meerschaum, which debuted at this years Chicago Show! Fortunately, I was able to secure 30 cobs, 15 bent and 15 straight!

Special thanks go out to our friends atpipesandcigars.com, Eric, Trish and of course Russ in helping to provide the cobs and the tobacco, I cannot thank you all enough!

As always, this years club cob will be stamped in the usual fashion, NYPC - Picnic Cob 2014, to commemorate the special event. Be sure to join us so that you too can add this commemorative club cob to your collection because, as always, the official NYPC 2014 Summer Picnic Corn Cob Pipe will be available only to attendees, so be sure to join us! Here's a photo of what you can expect (sans the nomenclature)...

The all new Mark Twain corncob has a smooth Dublin shaped bowl with a large capacity. This pipe was made for long, contemplative smokes after a busy day. Sit back, pack a bowl and relax with the brand new addition to the Missouri Meerschaum collection of cobs. The Mark Twain is the perfect large, light weight corncob that you have been waiting for. Comes in bent and straight stemmed models.

And to compliment the new Mark Twain Corn Cob pipe, this years tobacco offering will be the 4 new Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob Blends, blended by master tobacco blender, and friend of the club, Russ Oullette. These blends debuted at the 2014 Chicago Pipe Show and were a huge success. These four blends will be waiting for you after you receive your official club cob.

Missouri Meerschaum Great Dane

The Missouri Meerschaum Great Dane pipes are their take on Danish designs, so when we wanted to make a tobacco with the same name, we thought that a Danish-inspired aromatic would be the best choice. This blend consists of a good portion of gently-steamed black Cavendish, select Virginias and some white Burley, which have been topped with a smooth and rich combination of a deep, dark cherry, without the sharpness of the typical "maraschino" flavor, and warm notes of vanilla and caramel, for an easy-smoking blend with a lightly-sweet flavor and an amazing aroma.

Missouri Meerschaum Missouri Pride

Missouri Pride is the kind of blend that most pipe enthusiasts would associate with the Missouri Meerschaum corn cob experience. This is a blend of superb quality Burleys with some Virginias added, and minimal top flavoring. The blend is made up of broken flake, with some ribbon-cut Burley, for a nice, even burn, and the flake processing adds a deeper flavor to the tobacco. For a smooth blend with real tobacco flavor you can enjoy all day long, try a pouch of Missouri Pride.

Missouri Meerschaum Country Gentleman

Country Gentleman represents a unique departure among pouch tobaccos. This blend features a mixture of premium bright and red Virginias, which is enriched with Perique, and a small amount of dark-fired Kentucky for body. This is a tobacco that would be at home in a tin with a higher price tag, but to befit bearing the Missouri Meerschaum name, it comes to you at an everyday bargain price. Enjoy the naturally sweet, and tangy character of Country Gentleman.

Missouri Meerschaum American Patriot

American Patriot is a highly unusual type of blend to find in a pouch. This is a Latakia-based blend, enhanced by quality Virginia leaf, and the exotic influence of Turkish Smyrna, with just a touch of Burley for excellent burning characteristics. A light top note of Kentucky Bourbon makes for a nice addition to the aroma, but is undetectable in the flavor. For a superb value in an English-style blend, light up a bowl of American Patriot.

Free food, free 'baccy, a free cob - who wouldn't want to attend? Whether you can or you can't make it, please RSVP "Yes" or "No" to this email or call Lou at 347-886-9784347-886-9784so that we'll have an idea of who is coming. We need to know how much food and drink to buy so please let us know even if you aren't planning to attend the gathering. Wives and children are also welcome.

The party will start at 1pm
- here is Hank's address:

Hank Saatchi

17 University Road
East Brunswick, NJ 08816

Hank's place is an easy drive for our New Jersey members and a short ride for those from elsewhere. You can simply place the address into your GPS or for those driving from NYC and elsewhere.

For those without cars, take the bus out of Port Authority in NYC to the East Brunswick Tower Center stop or take the North East Corridor Line train from Penn Station to New Brunswick, use the express if possible. In both cases, we will work on arranging to have you picked up from those stations to Hank's place which is a short drive away. If we know who is coming we'll also try to coordinate car-pooling from New York City. Call Lou at 347-886-9784347-886-9784 and I'll try my best to work it out.

*** As per our good brother Mike B, please take note of his suggestion if you are taking the bus out of NYC:

"The bus service to the East Brunswick Tower Center is Suburban Transit (Coach USA)and their gates are on the fourth floor (Gates 417 to 420) at Port Authority, NYC. Check at their ticket booth before you go up to the platform (the ticket booth is on the first floor) to buy your ticket. I believe it is about $9.00 each way. Buses depart every half hour on the hour.

I would recommend the bus service rather than train. It takes the same amount of time and is closer to Hank's house."

IMPORTANT: For those driving, we need you to bring a folding chair or two. Hank has a limited number of seats so additional seating would be much appreciated.

BTW, this event is free and is made possible by your voluntary dues payment of $25 per year. If you haven't paid your 2014 dues, now would be a great time to do so via the website, mailing a check or by seeing Lou. If you aren't sure whether you are a 2014 member, just ask!

FYI... if you are a sharp detective (Mike B. you don't count - unfair advantage!) you may have detected a bit of a clue about the Mystery Guest but I will say no more!

This looks to be yet another great pipe event of the social season, so don't miss it. Mark your calendars, warn your spouses, and start choosing your best picnic pipes. See you there!

ATTENTION, ATTENTION!!!

A Special Thanks

To Our Friends

at

Nat Sherman's!

Our friend Christopher McGrath, Retail Associate at Nat Sherman's, graciously opened the doors to the spacious and comfortable, Johnson Club Room at Nat Sherman's on June 1st as our Club was invited to join him and other special guests for the proud launch of his own newly created blend, under the Nat Sherman name, "Wayfarer", a superb Virginia and Perique Pipe Tobacco Blend that is sure to please.

Thanks to Chris and our friends at Nat Sherman's, we had the privilege of sampling some of this outstanding VaPer! Close to 10 members of our Club came out to the launch party. We had a great time helping Chris fire up some wonderful "Wayfarer" tobacco! It is a fantastic example of the genre! Attention, Attention, all Virginia - Perique lovers - get yours today at Nat Sherman's!

From Chris:
"Wayfarer"

Wayfarer is a rich Virginia/Perique blend, using some of the finest red and bright Virginias that I can get my hands on. Starting out with a mild hint of pepper, the bowl slowly develops into a nuanced smoke, with hints of sugar, peat and ripened fruit.
On behalf of the NY Pipe Club, I would like to personally thank the Sherman Family, also to Pat Felitti, Director of Store Sales, Hospitality & Operations, to Director of Brand Development, Michael Herklots, and of course, to Chris McGrath, Retail Associate for extending the invitation to our New York Pipe Club! - Lou

CIPC President, Cornelius Crans

Visits our NY Pipe Club!

Our NY Pipe Club had the distinct privilege of welcoming a distinguished guest at our May 2014 meeting: Cornelius Crans and his wonderful wife. Cornelius is the President of the CIPC - Comite International of Pipe Smoker Clubs, who, thanks to our own Mr. Vernon Vig, made a stop over in our fair City after attending the 2014 Chicago Pipe Show.
The CIPC was founded in Saint-Claude, France in 1973 as an association of national pipe clubs to foster friendship and camaraderie among pipe smokers worldwide. Our new friend Cornelius is the current President. The UPCA - United Pipe Clubs of America, whom we belong to, is a member of the CIPC.
Here is a link to CIPC Brochures:
CIPC Brochures

Also, at the May Meeting, I was the proud recipient of a generous gift from Cornelius. Cornelius presented me with a traditional Dutch Porcelain Commemorative Pipe (for display purposes) as well as a clay version that can be smoked. He also presented me with the traditional Troost Special Cavendish Pipe Tobacco to go along with the pipes! I was so honored to receive them and they will take a special place not only in my collection but in my heart.
I hope that we can once again enjoy his company at a NYPC Monthly Meeting in the future!
Thank you, Cornelius for your generous gift. It was a pleasure for us to meet you and your wonderful wife. You both are honorary members of our NY Pipe Club. Please stay in touch and I look forward to seeing you soon!
Lou

The Latest NEWS

ABOUT OUR

NYPC TOBACCO BLENDS!!!

Just a quick word to let you know that all four of our storied blends are NOW re-stocked and available for sale at NYPC Tobacco Blends at www.pipesandcigras.com. As many of you know, if you have attempted to order at least two of our wonderful NYPC Tinned Tobacco Blends from pipesandcigars.com in the last 9 months or more you would have found that they have been continually out of stock which was cause for much frustration. Our dear friend and master blender of our tinned tobaccos, Russ Oulette, has worked very hard to meet the demand for the blends however, due to his new role and ever expanding responsibilities with pipesandcigars.com, it became increasingly difficult for him to sufficiently meet that demand and supplies have suffered. This is especially true of the two pressed Virginia blends which are the most time consuming to produce.

After some valuable input, advice and suggestions from many of our own NYPC members, upon having opportunity to sample the Sutliff versions, Russ has communicated our recommended adjustments to Sutliff and as a result, 192 tins of each blend were produced. The resulting inventory is back on the shelves NOW at www.pipesandcigars.com!!!

Here's a direct link:

With Sutliff driving production, we can be now assured that our blends will be continuously available. It will also help keep the royalties coming in to help fund club activities and tobacco tastings.

Our own Dan Silverstone, creator of our beautiful tin labels, has worked with Russ to convert our tin labels to fit the new tin format. On that note, we are also exploring the possibility of having our blends tinned in the popular round Euro-style tins. Stay tuned for more info on that as the story develops!

We are also in discussion about having our blends be made available via other internet tobacco sales sources in addition to pipesandcigars.com, which would open up sales to a greater degree. And finally, we are also discussing having our blends be made available in bulk form.

I am positive all this will work out perfectly for us, as it has for many of Russ' own blends, as well as other Pipe Club's and their tinned blends, which he created and are now produced by Sutliff. This solution will enable Russ, via Sutliff, to supply the demand for our wonderful NYPC tinned blends on a continuous basis.

Again to reiterate, most importantly to me in all of this is that, like Russ’ blends, our own NYPC Blends, will be made to Russ’ exacting specifications in every way. That means using the exact same leaf quality, production processes and strict adherence to the recipes that we as a club, along with Russ, have worked so hard to achieve over a number of years. The only noticeable changes will be the tins (containers themselves - and some great news regarding them will be revealed soon - like utilizing the round Euro-style vacuum sealed tins -) and the thickness of the cake slices, as they (Sutliff) have the capacity to cut them thinner for easier prep – which is a good thing in my opinion.

And, remember at some point in the future, with Sutliff driving production, we can consider expanding our NYPC "NY State of Mind" series to new and interesting blends yet to come! I am sure that we will be satisfied with the Sutliff versions and I look forward to seeing them back on the shelves and in a briar, meerschaum or corn cob bowl near you!!!

NYPC Pipe Tobacco Blends!

***You may have heard that pipesandcigars.com was purchased recently by Cigars International, a Pennsylvania based retailer and one of the biggest on the planet. Well have no fear, our blends are still under the blending prowess of our dear friend and "brother" Russ Oulette, who is now with the retailer in Bethlehem, PA. So, not only are our blends still in the best hands they can be, the best part is that NY State residents have a reprieve from the 75% tobacco tax because the shipping originates from PA. So, stock up on those blends now!

You can read all about the sale of pipesandcigars.com at the following link courtesy of our friend, Kevin Godbee and pipesmagazine.com. BTW, our buddy Scott from Habana Smoke Shop, the brick and mortar arm of pipesandcigars.com, still owns the shop so if fate ever finds you in or around the Albany, NY area, please be sure to stop in and say hello!

Now back to our blends...!

As you may have heard, thanks to good friend, Russ Oulette, our own series of four tinned tobacco blends, the NY State of Mind Collection, made their proud debut exclusively on our good friend, Kevin Godbee's informative pipesmagazine.com website and "in the tins" at the 2012 Chicagoland Pipe and Tobaccianna Show on May 5th and 6th, compliments of pipesandcigars.com, where our blends were extremely well received by all! Many thanks go out to Scotty and the gang at pipesandcigars.com, exclusive distributors of our blends, who had a ton of samples which were given away to all. With our four blend variety, there was something to please almost any taste!

Pipes & Tobaccos Magazine Reviews NY Pipe Club Blends!

As I have been telling you, our club blends currently enjoy favorable and positive reviews in the Fall 2012 Issue of Pipes & Tobaccos Magazine's Trial by Fire section on fine tobaccos. Tobacco tasting connoisseurs Tad Gage and Joe Harb have been reviewing blends for P&T Magazine for years. Tad Gage is a blender of fine tobaccos and Joe Harb was a judge at the 2012 Chicago Show's John Cotton Throwdown. Both are well versed in critiquing tobacco blends of all types and their opinions are of the most respected in the hobby.

I am overjoyed, to say the least especially knowing how hard we all worked on achieving the finished product, that our 4 blends received extremely positive and favorable reviews from both of these gentlemen - and of course, I concur!!! (LOL!!!) But seriously, both Mr. Gage and Mr. Harb enjoyed sampling our blends, loved the artwork - I kid you not, at the 2012 Chicago Show in which our blends debuted, I had requests from pipe smokers who wanted to buy the tins for the artwork alone - I am so proud of that, let alone the blends themselves, and both commented that they would love to revisit the blends after they have put some age on the tins. So this is fantastic news for our blends! Pick yourself up a back-copy of the Fall 2012 Issue at your local tobacconist or order one from the link listed below. And... If you are currently not a subscriber to this fine publication you should really consider taking out a subscription and lend them your support.

Speaking of P&T Magazine...

If you are a subscriber to this fine publication then you will already know that the club has placed a quarter page ad which appeared, appropriately, in the "Trial By Fire" tobacco review section in theWinter 2013 Issue. A follow up ad also appears in the Spring 2014 issue. Here is a copy of our ad, and once again, THANK YOU, to club member Dan Silverstone for lending your expertise in graphical arts for the benefit of our club, we appreciate it!

That's right, thanks to the tireless efforts of beloved members Peter Guss and Dan Silverstone, our new Club Logo Pins are finally in stock, look incredibly great and are ready to be worn on your lapel, as a tie tack, on your NY Pipe Clubware cap or anywhere else you would like to pin them. The pins are 1"x1" and look exactly like the logo below. They turned out unbelievably great! If I had a dollar for every time I was asked for a NY Pipe Club pin at the Chicago Show I'd be able to buy myself a Bo Nordh pipe! At a cost of only $5.00 each, get yours while they last! Contact or see Lou at the next meeting to get yours!

CONTEMPLATIVE SMOKES...

I would ask that you please keep our dear friend and member, Z. Kriz in your thoughts and prayers. Z is continuing to undergo treatment and is dealing with a lengthy recovery. Raise a bowl to Z!

Recently, I had the privilege of meeting Z for coffee at a very quaint French Bistro in the Cobble Hill neighborhood in which he lives. He is doing well, staying positive and fighting the good fight. He asked me to send a huge "Hello" to the club and to say that he misses sharing smokes with us. He also asked me to pass along his sincerest thanks for sending the get well cards and well wishes which we have sent him over the past year.
Z hopes that someday soon he will be able to surprise us at a meeting. Until then, please keep Z in your thoughts and prayers and as always, when you light your bowl, be sure to raise it to Z!

My heart-felt THANK YOU goes out to all of you for your generosity throughout 2013. Again, may you all have a Wonderful, Prosperous, Happy and Healthy New Year and I look forward to seeing you at our meetings and sharing many bowls with you through 2014!

Come on out to the meeting this Tues. and join us in keeping the bowl lit! All are welcome!

See you on the 8th at CIRCA TABAC - Lou

______________________________

FYI... Food For Thought... I am sure you are well aware of the change in our relationship with Florio's while we were meeting there. Effective with our February 2010 meeting, a $10 per person cover charge was imposed to use the upstairs cigar lounge. Payment of this fee enabled us to continue to use the lounge for our monthly meetings andwas collected by the waitress when you entered thelounge. The fee was for use of the cigar lounge only and did not go to the waitress. Please note that the main complaint from Florio's management was that the waitress was not sufficiently compensated (tipped) for her service, so please, especially now that we are meeting at a new location, let us heed this message at our new venue, Circa Tabac and I urge you to please tip accordingly as you settle your food and drink tab at the end of the evening. It will go a long way towards securing our invitation to return. Circa Tabac has made every effort to ensure our comfort so let's please remember to tip accordingly. I THANK YOU!
